The hard tissue of the softened and damaged tooth is removed, the tooth is purified from decay. After the decay is cleaned, a suitable filling material should be placed in the cavity formed. This filling material should be easy to apply and should not cause any leakage by covering the cavity perfectly. At the same time, the aesthetic appearance of this filling is a reason for preference for patients and us physicians. If the patient has sensitivity to heat, inability to chew comfortably or severe pain with bruising, or if the decay reaches the living tissue (pulp) in the tooth, root canal treatment is performed first, and then the filling is placed in the cavity.
Filling Types
Amalgam Filling / Composite Filling / Porcelain Filling
As a filling material in dentistry in general; amalgam, composite, compomer or porcelain fillings (inlay-onlay) are used.
AMALGAM FILLING
It is a mixture of mercury with silver, copper and tin. This mixture, which was used routinely in the past, is now being gradually abandoned due to aesthetic concerns.
Advantages of Amalgam Filling
- It is more economical than other fillings.
- It is easy to apply.
- It is resistant to chewing forces.
- It prevents the formation of decay under the filling significantly.
COMPOSITE FILLING
Composite fillings; It consists of a combination of different substances. It can be shaped as plastic and hardened by ultraviolet (UV) light. This is the reason why it is called radiant filling among the people. It is a filling material that is routinely applied in our clinic and developed countries. The aesthetic success rate it provides especially in the front teeth is high.
Advantages of Composite Filling
With composite fillings, teeth that could only stay in the mouth with porcelain veneers in the past and preserve their integrity can now exhibit an extremely aesthetic appearance without the need for coating.
- The application can be completed in a single session.
- Since there is no need to remove more material from the tooth before the filling is placed, they do not cause the loss of tooth hard tissue.
- Even very small cavities can be closed.
PORCELAIN FILLING (Inlay-Onlay)
Porcelain fillings are a filling method that is applied to patients who have a lot of material loss and who require crown application by shrinking the whole tooth to protect healthy dental tissue. It is preferred over amalgam fillings because it is more aesthetic and useful.
Advantages of Porcelain Filling
- It has a long-term use and is durable.
- Rejuvenation time is very long.
- It is extremely aesthetic.
- The hardness of the material is very close to the hardness of tooth enamel.
- It is extremely resistant to chewing forces in posterior teeth (molars) compared to composite fillings.
- After the cavity is prepared, it is measured and prepared in the laboratory, so it has a perfect dental fit.
